Can I Still Go to College? The Nontraditional Guide to Your Higher Education
Depending on your path in life, you might have been told that it is impossible for you to get into a college or even to have the time to take classes. While this idea comes from the sentiment that not everyone needs to go to college, if you want a higher education, all you need to do is know your paths and take them. Tradition has no power to stop you from making a change.
Before you start the process of success, you have to trust yourself and visualize where you want to end up. If academics have never been your strong suit, you need to find ways to improve your grades. In this case, you could get a tutor or spend more time with your books and practicing success through practice exams. As a non-traditional student, you need to come to understand what kind of learning works best for you. For example, if you are a visual learner, simply talking about something is not enough for your brain to fully comprehend what is being taught.
At the end of the day, the only evidence you have of higher education is on a piece of paper, on a certificate or diploma. Colleges and universities mainly just want some sort of proof that you can be successful in higher education and keep up with the demands of your classes. For example, if you didn’t graduate from high school, you can take the GED and use that in the place of a diploma. As an adult, this can often be done during night school, which allows you to keep your old job while expanding the reach of your understanding. Qualifications also look good on job applications for when you transfer or graduate.
Just as every person is different and has different needs, every college is different. In order for you to get the most out of college, make sure that your choices have reasons behind them like the difficulty in class. If you have an easier time participating in large, lecture-style meetings, you might want to choose a much larger university. However, if you would prefer a smaller class, you should enroll in a smaller university. You can also want an accelerated program, where you can graduate early, you need to be willing to put in the long hours of work.
Even if you are a nontraditional student, the number one thing you need for class is a smile and determination to succeed in school. You can expand your horizons just as much as other students. Higher education can change your life for the better.
